Weaver loses first start as Red Sox top Angels
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}BOSTON (Reuters) - The Boston Red Sox handed streaking pitcher Jered Weaver his first loss of the season with a 9-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels Monday.
Weaver, who had won his first six starts of the season and entered the night with an ERA under 1.00, allowed three runs in six innings before watching the Red Sox hitters feast upon his bullpen.
"There always seems to be a little something in Boston that doesn't seem to go my way -- or go the team's way," Weaver told reporters, having allowed a two-run single to Dustin Pedroia in the fifth.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Weaver left the mound with the Angels trailing 3-2 before Boston exploded for six runs in the seventh to take the opener of the teams' four-game series.
The Red Sox (13-15) swept Los Angeles in their previous four-game series last month.
Adrian Gonzalez hit a three-run double and David Ortiz added a two-run homer for the Red Sox during their big inning.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Boston starter Clay Buchholz allowed two runs in 6 2/3 innings to get the win and improve to 2-3 on the season.
Buchholz had been struggling to reproduce last year's form when he finished 17-7.
Vernon Wells hit a two-run home run in the eighth, while Bobby Abreu had two RBIs for the Angels (16-13).
