Over the course of the past two months, LSU head coach Les Miles had cultivated a relationship with a recently-deceased teenager named Sid Ortis.
Although a native of Alabama, Ortis was a massive fan of the Tigers' program. He attended the contest versus Auburn in person, and spoke to Miles multiple times over the phone.

Miles spoke to the media about the nature of his relationship with Ortis, and the admiration he had for him as a person.
"I was fortunate to meet Sid Ortis," said Miles. "He had so much spirit and excitement, and he loved his Tigers. Sid is in a better place."
