Walthall County, in south Miss., agrees to clear ineligible people off inflated voter roll

South Mississippi's Walthall County has agreed to clear the names of ineligible voters off of its voter registration roll, including the names of dead people or felons if they're found.

The agreement was filed Wednesday in a consent order in U.S. District Court in Hattiesburg.

A conservative group, the American Civil Rights Union, sued two south Mississippi counties, Walthall and Jefferson Davis, in April. The lawsuits say the counties both had more registered voters than residents 18 or older. The Jefferson Davis lawsuit is still unresolved.

The Associated Press reported in October 2008 that more than one-third of the 82 counties had more registered voters than residents old enough to cast a ballot.
