Tigers' Cabrera has fractured orbital bone
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera has a fractured orbital bone that could put his status for opening day in jeopardy.
Cabrera was hurt Monday in the first inning of a spring training game against the Phillies when a sharp grounder off the bat of Philadelphia's Hunter Pence took a bad hop and struck him underneath his right eye.
Bleeding profusely, and holding a towel to his face, Cabrera was escorted from the field with team training personnel and taken to the locker room for evaluation. He needed eight stitches to close the laceration.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}On Tuesday, Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski revealed that Cabrera sustained a non-displaced fracture below the right eye and will rest for at least a week. He will then be further evaluated.
Cabrera, last year's American League batting champion with a .344 average, moved from first base to third base this spring after the Tigers acquired Prince Fielder as a free agent.
The six-time All-Star has played third base in the past, appearing in 387 games at the hot corner with the Marlins and Tigers. He moved to first base full-time to start the 2009 season.
