Spieth surges into contention with 64 after rain alters course at 14 in 2nd round of Nelson

Jordan Spieth surged into contention on a day the Masters champion isn't sure he will see again at his hometown AT&T Byron Nelson.

Spieth and every other early finisher within three shots of the lead had a birdie 2 on what was supposed to be the par-4 14th Friday. An overnight rain storm turned one of the signature holes at the saturated TPC Four Seasons into a pitch-and-putt par 3 at 105 yards.

Jon Curran was the early second-round leader at 9 under, one better than Cameron Percy with other contenders unlikely to finish after the start was delayed three hours. He shot 63 — 6 under because par became 69 for one round at least because of the rain.

Spieth shot 64 and was 6 under for the tournament.
