Southern pulls away to beat Jackson State 50-31
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) Austin Howard was 21 of 32 for 395 yards, a touchdown and an interception, helping Southern beat Jackson State 50-31 on Saturday night.
Lenard Tillery added 135 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries for the Jaguars (2-1, 2-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference). Willie Quinn had six catches for 107 yards and a touchdown while Randall Menard had four catches for 83 yards.
Jackson State (0-3, 0-1) trailed 29-7 at halftime but rallied to within 36-24 on Ryan Deising's 30-yard field goal with 1:57 left in the third quarter.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Malcolm Crockett and Austin Howard answered with TD runs early in the fourth for Southern to put it out of reach.
LaMontiez Ivy led Jackson State on 29-of-53 passing with three touchdowns and one interception.
