Sources: Dodgers near deal OF Johnson
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The Dodgers are close to signing free-agent outfielder Reed Johnson, according to major-league sources.
Johnson, 33, would serve as a fourth outfielder behind Andre Ethier, Matt Kemp and Manny Ramirez.
Jason Repko and Xavier Paul are the only other outfielders on the Dodgers' roster following the trade of Juan Pierre to the White Sox.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Johnson, a right-handed hitter, plays all three outfield positions. He spent the past two years with the Cubs, but had an injury-marred 2009.
In June, Johnson went on the disabled list with lower back spasms, an issue that has hindered him for the past three seasons. He then suffered a fractured left foot July 30 and did not return until Sept. 21.
When healthy, Johnson is an effective hitter and defender. His career batting/on-base/slugging line is .282-.344-.411.
