Simon upsets Ferrer, Federer advances at U.S. Open
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Flushing Meadows, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Frenchman Gilles Simon upset fourth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer on Sunday, while Roger Federer topped Marcel Granollers to reach the fourth round of the U.S. Open.
Simon, seeded 26th, fired nine aces and broke serve seven times in a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 win at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Ferrer, who committed 52 unforced errors, had won 16 straight third-round Grand Slam matches. He is the first top-10 seed to lose in the men's draw.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Federer was trailing 5-2 in the first set before a heavy downpour halted play for two hours. The second-seeded super Swiss dominated play when it resumed, winning 18 of the last 20 games en route to a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 triumph.
Simon will play 14th-seeded Marin Cilic in the fourth round. He was a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 winner over 18th-seeded Kevin Anderson. Federer, meanwhile, will square off with 17th-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut, who beat Adrian Mannarino, 7-5, 6-2, 6-3.
In other action Sunday, sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych topped Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-3, 6-2, 6-4, 20th-seeded Gael Monfils downed 12th-seeded Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-2, 6-2, Dominic Thiem upset 19th-seeded Feliciano Lopez 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 and seventh-seeded Grigor Dimitrov defeated David Goffin 0-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-1.
