Serena to meet Venus in Montreal semis

Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - Three-time champion Serena Williams and her big sister Venus Williams will square off in a semifinal Saturday at the $2.44 million Rogers Cup.

The world No. 1 stalwart Serena outlasted 11th-seeded former top-ranked star Caroline Wozniacki 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 on the hardcourts at Montreal's Uniprix Stadium. Wozniacki had been riding an eight-match winning streak, including a recent title in Istanbul.

Serena converted on her third match point when her good friend Wozniacki misfired long on one final backhand after 2 hours, 40 minutes of tennis.

The 32-year-old Serena is now 7-1 lifetime versus the 2010 Rogers Cup champ Wozniacki.

The American great, fresh off her U.S. Open Series title last week in Stanford, captured this long-time Canadian event in 2001, 2011 and last year and was the runner-up here in 2000.

Serena beat Romanian Sorana Cirstea in last year's final in Toronto, as this tournament shifts between Montreal and Toronto each year.

The former No. 1 Venus, meanwhile, overcame and upset 14th-seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to set-up the showdown with her younger sibling.

Serena is 14-10 lifetime versus the 34-year-old Venus and Saturday will mark only their second meeting in the last five years. Serena whipped Venus in a match in Charleston last season.

Serena has won her last five matches against her big sister, with Venus' last win coming in Dubai in 2009.

The other semifinal match will see Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska taking on Russian Ekaterina Makarova after the two also were quarterfinal winners on Friday.

The third-seeded Radwanska had little trouble in her match with eighth- seeded Victoria Azarenka, recording a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Makarova had a bit more trouble in her match with American qualifier Coco Vandeweghe before prevailing in a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 decision.

The 2014 Rogers Cup champion will collect $467,300.
