Schalke's Fahrmann undergoes knee surgery
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann has undergone successful knee surgery to repair his medial and anterior cruciate ligaments, and will be sidelined for several months.
Fahrmann suffered the injury in a Bundesliga match against Kaiserslautern, and the squad signed former Germany goalie Timo Hildebrand as an option during his absence.
"The surgery went well. It was important," Schalke manager Huub Stevens said. "If we hadn't treated the injury aggressively, it's likely that he'd have problems with that knee again in two or three months."
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Lars Unnerstall, 21, replaced Fahrmann against Kaiserslautern and has played the last two matches for Schalke. He will battle Hildebrand for the starting job.
Schalke is in third place in the Bundesliga, four points behind Bayern Munich, and hosts Hoffenheim on Saturday in its next match.
