Former Saints defensive end Will Smith, who was shot and killed Saturday night in New Orleans, will be inducted into the team's Hall of Fame.

The Saints announced Sunday that their media selection committee had chosen Smith in March and that an official announcement was expected to be made May 17. The date of the ceremony is yet to be determined, and the Saints confirmed Sunday that Smith knew he had been selected.

Smith, 34, played 10 seasons for the Saints after they made him the 18th overall pick in the 2004 draft. He retired in 2013 with 67.5 career sacks and one Pro Bowl selection. He had a career-high 13 sacks during the Saints' 2009 Super Bowl-winning season.
