Lochte suffered a torn MCL and sprained ACL in his left knee Sunday in Florida after catching a fan who ran at him and hitting his knee on the curb when the two fell to the ground, USA Today reported Tuesday.
The fan, a teenage girl, wasn't hurt, according to the report.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Lochte's publicist called the incident "a freak accident" and said the swimmer "will be taking a break from training and competition."
"His medical team expects him to make a full and speedy recovery and Ryan thanks everyone for their well wishes," the publicist said in a statement.
Lochte won five medals at last year's London Olympics, including two golds. He has 11 total medals from three Summer Games -- five gold, three silver and three bronze.
