Red Sox activate Matsuzaka, disable Ortiz
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The Boston Red Sox activated pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka from the 15-day disabled list and placed designated hitter David Ortiz on the 15-day DL among several roster moves on Monday.
Matsuzaka hadn't pitched since July 2 thanks to a right upper trapezius strain, but he was activated in time to make the start as the Sox completed a four-game series with the Royals with a 5-1 win. He worked seven innings, scattering five hits and one unearned run with two walks and six strikeouts.
The 31-year-old right-hander went 0-3 with a 6.65 earned run average in five starts after his recovery from Tommy John surgery, but was placed back on the DL on July 3.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Ortiz has been slowed by a right Achilles strain, and his move is retroactive to August 25. For the 36-year-old slugger, this marks his second DL stint in 2012, after a spell from July 17-August 23 with the same injury.
In addition, Boston recalled outfielder Ryan Kalish and optioned pitcher Pedro Beato to Triple-A Pawtucket.
Kalish will see his third stint with the big club this season. In 25 appearances with the Sox already, he hit just .203 with three doubles and five RBI.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Beato won his Red Sox debut on Sunday after being recalled from Pawtucket prior to the game.
