Newton expected to start Sunday against Lions

Charlotte, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera said he expects Cam Newton to start at quarterback for Sunday's game against Detroit after missing the season opener because of a rib injury.

Newton was declared inactive for Sunday's game against Tampa Bay just prior to kickoff after being a limited participant in practice last week because of a fractured rib he sustained during the preseason.

Rivera said the Panthers will employ the same strategy as last week, with Newton expected to practice all week before a final determination is made.

"We expect to see him on the practice field come Wednesday," Rivera said Monday. "We had a plan last week and unfortunately we didn't get to (the point where he could play)."

Asked if he believed Newton would start, Rivera responded, "Yes, I do."

Derek Anderson started for Newton against the Buccaneers and completed 24- of-34 passes for 230 yards with a pair of touchdowns and no interceptions in the 20-14 victory.
