New Montreal mayor has public tiff with Canadiens over Twitter comment about Desharnais
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The Montreal Canadiens don't appreciate the hockey commentary coming from the city's new mayor.
Denis Coderre, who was elected Nov. 3, tweeted during Sunday's win over the Islanders: "Hello? Can we get a one-way ticket to Hamilton for David Desharnais please..."
It was a rather run-of-the-mill remark for a regular fan, many of whom have criticized the play of the struggling forward. But this came from a government official, and the team pushed back Monday.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Forward Max Pacioretty calls the comment embarrassing. Josh Gorges says it's wrong to kick someone when they're down.
Coach Michel Therrien says: "I really believe this is inappropriate from our mayor."
In Coderre's first week, he has already had a run-in with the Parti Quebecois provincial government over its religion charter and with the powerful mayor of Quebec City over a perceived slight. He also encouraged embattled Toronto Mayor Rob Ford to switch to Diet Coke.
