Monchengladbach and Mainz battle to draw

Monchengladbach, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - Monchengladbach and Mainz both remained unbeaten on Sunday after the two sides played to a 1-1 draw at Borussia Park.

Monchengladbach entered the day five points back of leaders Bayern Munich, and Max Kruse got the team off to a good start in the 15th minute when he scored his third goal of the campaign.

But Mainz answered just after the half-hour mark with a penalty kick from Jonas Hofmann to give the visitors their fifth draw in seven Bundesliga games.

The home side enjoyed the brighter start and seized the advantage when Fabian Johnson got into the penalty area and slid a pass to the center of the box for Kruse, who took a touch before stroking the ball home with his left foot.

But the lead lasted just 16 minutes as Monchengladbach defender Julian Korb was called for handling the ball inside his own area, allowing Hofmann to beat goalkeeper Yann Sommer from the spot.

Monchengladbach had the better chances over the remainder of the match, but substitute Thorgan Hazard failed to beat goalkeeper Loris Karius after being played in behind the defense by Granit Xhaka, while Raffael was unable to score from close range in the closing minutes after being set up by Hazard.

Sunday's other match in the Bundesliga saw Wolfsburg move into the top half of the league with a 1-0 victory over Augsburg.

Chances were at a premium in the match, but Naldo separated the sides with a nice strike from just inside the penalty area in the 58th minute.
