Mitchell, Newsome lead Western Carolina past Catawba 35-17
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Troy Mitchell threw for 223 yards with two touchdowns, and rushed for a third as Western Carolina defeated Division II Catawba College 35-17 on Saturday.
Mitchell threw touchdowns of 44 yards to Spearman Robinson and 56 yards to Willie Police in the first quarter to push the Catamounts (2-1) out to an early 14-0 lead. He scored on a 19-yard keeper to go up 21-10 in the third quarter.
Detrez Newsome ran for a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Mitchell was 16 of 27 for Western Carolina. Robinson finished with three receptions for 72 yards and Police had three for 67.
Mike Sheehan threw for 236 yards on 21-of-36 passing with two touchdowns, but threw two first-half interceptions for the Indians. Gary Williams had 94 yards receiving, including a 20-yard score from Sheehan in the second quarter.
