Messier's Canada loses Spengler Cup final
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}A Canadian team coached by NHL great Mark Messier lost to SKA St. Petersburg 4-3 Friday in the final of the Spengler Cup.
Maxim Sushinsky scored twice for the Russians, who escaped after a finish featuring three goals in the last 90 seconds.
Messier, in his first major coaching stint, had a team mainly of Canadian players based in Europe. The Spengler Cup was first held in 1923 and is the world's oldest pro hockey tournament.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Alexei Yashin and Maxim Afinogenov scored in the second period to put the Russians up 3-1. Brett McLean made it 3-2 with a power-play goal 18:38 into the third.
Sushinskiy scored his second of the game into an empty net 19 seconds later. Josh Holden deflected in a shot with two seconds left.
