Manny Ramirez arrested for battery
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Former MLB All-Star Manny Ramirez was arrested Monday by Weston, Florida police for an alleged domestic violence incident.
According to information from the Broward Sheriff's Office -- where Ramirez was booked and held in the main jail -- he was charged with one count of battery.
Citing a police report, NBC Miami reported Ramirez's wife, Juliana, told police he hit her with an open hand during a dispute. The report added she said she hit her head on their bed's headboard and, fearing further violence, called police.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The NBC report said Manny Ramirez told police his wife hit her head after he grabbed her by the shoulders and shrugged. The police report notes swelling on the left side of Juliana Ramirez's face, as well as a contusion on the back of her head, NBC reported.
Ramirez, 39, retired in April after violating baseball's drug program for a second time. He would have faced a 100-game suspension, and played in just five games for the Rays this season before retiring.
The slugger batted .312 with 555 homers, a .411 on-base percentage and 1,831 RBI over 19 seasons, mostly with Cleveland and Boston. He also played for the Dodgers, White Sox and Rays.
