Kagawa scores as Dortmund downs Freiburg

Dortmund, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - Shinji Kagawa enjoyed a fine return to Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, scoring one goal and setting up another to help his side to a 3-1 home win over Freiburg.

Kagawa returned to Dortmund from Manchester United at the end of the summer transfer window, and Saturday's match marked his return to the club where he netted 21 goals in 49 league appearances before departing for England.

And the Japan international made his impact in the 33rd minute when he played a great ball into the penalty area that cut open the Freiburg defense, allowing Kevin Grosskreutz to square it to Adrian Ramos for a simple finish.

Kagawa found the net himself in the 41st when Ramos played a ball into the area that eluded Henrikh Mkhitaryan and fell for Kagawa to slot home.

Substitute Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made it 3-0 to the hosts with 12 minutes to play when he came off the bench and provided a spark by using his pace to get in behind the Freiburg defense and chip a ball over the head of goalkeeper Roman Burki.

Oliver Sorg scored in the closing minutes for Freiburg to spoil Dortmund's clean sheet, but it was little consolation for the visitors, who have taken just one point from their first three games.

Bayern Munich got back into the win column on Saturday against Stuttgart after being held to a draw by Schalke in the club's last league outing. Mario Gotze provided the opening goal for the defending champions in the 27th minute, while Franck Ribery netted his first goal in Bundesliga play this season in the 85th minute to hand Bayern a 2-0 win.

Shinji Okazaki scored a goal in each half as Mainz topped Hertha Berlin, 3-1, Paderborn and Cologne played out a 0-0 draw, Ivica Olic scored in the 89th minute as Wolfsburg salvaged a 1-1 draw at Hoffenheim and Monchengladbach handed Schalke a 4-1 away defeat with Andre Hahn scoring in each half for the hosts.
