Juventus and Roma enjoy successful openers

Rome, Italy (SportsNetwork.com) - The top two teams in Serie A last season, Juventus and Roma, both opened their new campaigns on Saturday with wins as Juve topped Chievo, 1-0, while Roma claimed a 2-0 victory over Fiorentina.

After claiming a third straight Scudetto last term Juventus wasn't convincing in its first game but still managed to secure the narrow win thanks to an early own goal from Chievo's Cristiano Biraghi.

A header from Martin Caceres was redirected by Biraghi past his own goalkeeper inside of seven minutes, while Juventus was unlucky not to add to its lead.

Arturo Vidal hit the post and had a shot cleared off the goal line, while forward Carlos Tevez twice saw his shot hit the crossbar as Juve attempted to pad its narrow advantage.

Chievo managed little offensively but the team had a chance to steal a late point when Maxi Lopez forced a save from Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

Roma, meanwhile, got a good performance from Radja Nainggolan in the 2-0 win as he scored the first goal and set up the second for Gervinho to lock up three points.

Nainggolan pounced on a rebound from Gervinho's shot to put Roma up 1-0 in the 28th minute, while Gervinho got on the other end of a nice through ball from Nainggolan in the 90th minute to seal the win.
