Indians place Hafner on DL; surgery next
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The Cleveland Indians have placed designated hitter Travis Hafner on the 15-day disabled list because of a right knee injury that will require surgery.
Hafner, who last played on May 23, was initially diagnosed with inflammation in the knee. He will undergo a procedure on Thursday to have damaged meniscus repaired and will be sidelined 4-to-6 weeks.
In his 11th big league season and 10th with the Tribe, the veteran is hitting just .242 in 39 games with six home runs and 23 runs batted in.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Cleveland has recalled pitcher Scott Barnes from Triple-A Columbus to fill the vacant roster spot. Barnes is 0-2 with a 3.81 earned run average in 11 games, including three starts, for Columbus this season.
The 24-year-old right-hander, acquired from the Giants in 2009 for Ryan Garko, was moved to the bullpen in May and has pitched to an ERA of 2.19 in eight relief appearances.
