Germany wins 2 gold, 1 bronze in equestrian

Germany's Michael Jung won two equestrian gold medals on Tuesday while the granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth helped Great Britain to a silver.

Germany's win in team eventing was the country's first gold medal of the London Olympics and Jung followed it up with an individual gold hours later.

Sweden's Sara Algotsson Ostholt took silver and Germany's Sandra Auffarth earned bronze.

The German team finished with 133.70 penalty points after the jumping portion, 4.50 fewer than the British team. New Zealand had 6.20 points more at the end of four days of competition.

Zara Phillips, granddaughter of the queen, was one of 25 riders who made the individual jumping final at Greenwich Park. She placed eighth, but still came away with a silver in the team competition.

"It is huge to get an Olympic medal," said Phillips, whose father Mark won a team gold at the 1972 Munich Olympics. "It is a great thing and we were against some really tough competition."

Jung had 40.60 penalty points, nearly three fewer than Algotsson Ostholt.

Mark Todd, 56, had the second best score among his New Zealand teammates and won his sixth Olympic equestrian medal. Todd earned the first of two straight individual eventing golds at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, but placed 12th this time.

The United States placed seventh and Canada ended 13th in team competition.
