Flyers' Briere suspended three games for cross-check

TORONTO (Reuters) - Philadelphia Flyers forward Daniel Briere has been suspended for three games for cross-checking an opponent during the final minute of a match at the weekend, the NHL said on Monday.

Briere, who is tied for the team lead in goals, cross-checked New York Islanders forward Frans Nielsen during Philadelphia's 6-1 victory on Saturday.

After winning a face-off against Nielsen, Briere delivered a cross-check to his face that knocked the Islanders player to the ice and sparked a melee.

Considered a repeat offender by the NHL, Briere will miss Monday's game against Carolina, Thursday's game against the New York Rangers and Saturday's game against the Islanders.

Briere received a major penalty and a game misconduct for the offence.
