Dodgers designate Abreu for assignment

The Los Angeles Dodgers designated veteran outfielder Bobby Abreu for assignment Wednesday to make room for the newly acquired Shane Victorino.

Abreu, 38, was signed by the Dodgers as a free agent on May 4 and hit .251 with two homers and 17 RBI in 70 games with the club.

The native of Venezuela is a career .292 hitter with 565 doubles, 286 homers, 398 stolen bases and 1,347 RBI over 17 seasons with the Houston Astros, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, LA Angels of Anaheim and Dodgers.

A two-time All-Star, Abreu is one of four players in MLB history with more than 250 home runs, 350 stolen bases and 500 doubles, joining Barry Bonds, Rickey Henderson and Craig Biggio.

Victorino, who was acquired from Philadelphia Tuesday in exchange for pitchers Josh Lindblom and Ethan Martin and cash considerations or a player to be named later, is in Wednesday's starting lineup. He will play left field and bat leadoff.
