Djokovic moves on at Aussie Open
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Melbourne, Australia (SportsNetwork.com) - Three-time reigning and four-time overall champion Novak Djokovic was a second-round winner Wednesday at the Australian Open.
The second-seeded Serbian closed out the day session on Rod Laver Arena with a 6-0, 6-4, 6-4 win over Argentine Leonardo Mayer. Djokovic served 12 aces, committed only 11 unforced errors and didn't face a single break point.
Next up for Djokovic will be Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin after he ousted 30th- seeded Russian Dmitry Tursunov by a 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 margin.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Spaniard David Ferrer, Czech Tomas Berdych, Frenchman Richard Gasquet and Pole Jerzy Janowicz were among the other seeded players to post wins on Day 3.
The third-seeded Ferrer and the seventh-seeded Berdych both dismissed Frenchmen on Hisense Arena. Ferrer beat Adrian Mannarino 7-6 (7-2), 5-7, 6-0, 6-3 after Berdych topped Kenny De Schepper 6-4, 6-1, 6-3.
Ferrer will face another Frenchman in Jeremy Chardy in the third round after the 29th-seeded Chardy downed Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov 7-5, 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-5).
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Berdych's next opponent will be Damir Dzumhur, who moved on after Croat Ivan Dodig retired. Dzumhur fought back from two sets down and was leading 4-1 in the fourth set when the 32nd-seeded Dodig called it quits.
There were eight retirements on the men's side in the first round.
Gasquet, the ninth seed, handled former world No. 3 Russian Nikolay Davydenko 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, 6-4, while the 20th-seeded Janowicz overcame dropping the opening set to beat Spaniard Pablo Andujar 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Janowicz will next meet Florian Mayer after the German outlasted 14th-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, while Gasquet will take on 17th-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo, who registered a 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) triumph over France's Julien Benneteau.
Nineteenth-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa claimed a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Austria's Dominic Thiem, setting up a third-round matchup against Edouard Roger-Vasselin after the unseeded Frenchman notched a 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win against Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
Also on Wednesday, American Sam Querrey cruised to a 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 victory over 23rd-seeded Latvian Ernests Gulbis.
