Braves' Beachy has Tommy John surgery

Atlanta Braves pitcher Brandon Beachy underwent successful surgery to repair the partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow Thursday.

He will be out at least a year.

The procedure, commonly known as Tommy John surgery, was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Gulf Breeze, Florida.

Beachy left Saturday's game against the Orioles after 3 2/3 innings because of discomfort in the elbow. He was 5-5 with a major league-best 2.00 earned run average and had allowed 49 hits in 81 innings in his second major league season.
