Blackburn edges Sunderland to inch closer to safety

Blackburn grabbed two second-half goals 0 defeat of Sunderland.

Junior Hoilett provided the crucial breakthrough for Rovers in the 59th minute before Aiyegbeni Yakubu put the result beyond any doubt four minutes from time.

Hoilett's opener came following a throw-in that was not properly cleared by Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. The ball fell inside the box to Hoilett and was met by one-time volley from the Canadian. The shot made its way through traffic and bulged the back of the net to give the home side a crucial lead.

Rovers added to that lead late on with Yakubu netting his 14th goal of the season. The Nigerian ghosted into the box to get on the end of a cross and nod his effort past Mignolet.

After lifting his team six points above the relegation zone, there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel for manager Steve Kean, who has been on the hot seat for much of the year.

The win is Blackburn's second straight in Premier League play, bringing the club to 28 points on the season.

Sunderland, meanwhile, retains its ninth-place position with 37 points this term.
