Bills fire Edwards, promote Wannstedt

The Buffalo Bills have fired defensive coordinator George Edwards and promoted Dave Wannstedt to the position.

Head coach Chan Gailey made the announcement Monday afternoon, a day after the Bills finished a 6-10 season with a loss to New England.

Edwards spent two years as Buffalo's defensive coordinator and has 14 years of NFL experience. Prior to taking the Bills job, he was linebackers coach for the Miami Dolphins for five seasons.

Wannstedt was promoted after one season as Buffalo's assistant head coach and inside linebackers coach.

He spent the previous six years coaching college football at Pittsburgh and had 16 prior years of NFL experience, including stints as head coach of the Dolphins and Chicago Bears.

Buffalo's defense ranked 26th in the NFL this past season, giving up 371.1 yards per game.
