Baseball's Greatest All-Star Game Moments

In the 12th inning of the 1970 All-Star game, Pete Rose bowls over Ray Fosse at home plate to score the deciding run in a 5-4 National League victory at Riverfront Stadium. The Indian catcher, whose career was shortened because of the collision, had entertained Rose as a dinner guest the previous night. (AP)

Two years after becoming the first African-American to play in the Major Leagues, Jackie Robinson (far left) along with Larry Doby, Don Newcombe and Roy Campanella became the first African-Americans to appear in an All-Star Came. (AP)

Playing in his home field at the Polo Grounds in the 1934 All-Star game, Giants lefty Carl Hubbell squared off against future Hall of Famers Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Joe Cronin. Hubbell responded by striking out all five in order. (AP)

As the starting pitcher of the 1999 All-Star game in front of his home field in Boston, Pedro Martinez became the first pitcher to begin an All-Star game by striking out four batters. Martinez went on to strike out five batters in his two innings of work. (AP)

With two men on and the American League one out away from defeat, Ted Williams hit a 1–1 pitch off the right field press box for the first walk-off home run in Major League All-Star game history. (AP)

One of Ted Williams' final, and most memorable, public appearances was at the 1999 All-Star Game in Boston. Scheduled to throw out the first pitch of the game, Williams waved his cap to the crowd and the fans responded with a standing ovation that lasted several minutes. (AP)

Pinch-hitting in the fourth inning, Reggie Jackson hits a two-run home run in the third inning against the National League's Dock Ellis. The ball traveled 520 feet and hit off of a light tower in the upper reaches of Tiger Stadium. (AP)

In the 1983 All-Star game Fred Lynn became the first and, thus far, only player to hit a grand slam in an All-Star game en route to picking up the game's Most Valuable Player honors. (AP)

In the third inning of the 1993 All-Star game, left-handed-hitting John Kruk stepped in to face Randy Johnson with two outs and nobody on. Johnson's first pitch to Kruk was a fastball that sailed a few feet over Kruk's head. (AP)

In 2001, Cal Ripken Jr. made his 19th and final All-Star game appearance. In a tribute to Ripken shortstop Alex Rodriguez swapped positions with third baseman Ripken so that Ripken could play shortstop as he had for most of his career. In the third inning, Ripken homered off the first pitch he saw and ended up with All-Star MVP honors. (AP)

Regarded by some as the best defensive play in All-Star game history, Torii Hunter leaped to make the catch above the fence on a ball hit by Barry Bonds during the 2002 All-Star game. (AP)

The 2002 All-Star game ended in a tie after Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig discussed the decision with the umpires in the 11th inning. The game was call at the bottom of the inning with the score tied at 7-7. (AP)
