Assault charges against Varlamov dropped
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - A domestic violence case against Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov was dismissed by a Denver judge Friday at the prosecution's request, the Denver Post reported.
The city district attorney's office filed a motion to drop a misdemeanor charge of third-degree assault against Varlamov, who was arrested in October for allegedly attacking his girlfriend during a dispute at their Denver home. According to the newspaper, the prosecutors believed they would not be able to prove Varlamov's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
A previous charge of second-degree kidnapping had previously been dropped due to a lack of sufficient evidence.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Court records stated that Evgeniya Vavrinyuk told investigators that Varlamov kicked her and dragged her by her hair during an argument that led to the arrest, adding that the 25-year-old Russian was intoxicated.
Varlamov was able to travel and play with the Avalanche after posting a $5,000 bond shortly after being taken into custody.
The sixth-year NHL veteran has been putting together a strong season for Colorado, compiling a 16-8-1 record with a 2.37 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage over 25 games.
