VIDEO: RNC Chairman Calls on Weiner to Resign
Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus is calling on embattled New York Rep. Anthony Weiner to step down.
"Congressman Weiner's actions and deception are unacceptable and he should resign," Priebus said in a statement. "We do not need an investigation to know he lied and acted inappropriately, we need a resignation."
The political calculus seems to rest now in the hands of the Democratic leadership. To that end, Priebus called out House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
"Either Leader Pelosi and DNC Chair Wasserman Schultz believe members of Congress are held to a different set of standards or they believe these actions demand his resignation," said Priebus.
Priebus becomes the first major political figure to call on Weiner to resign, although other Republicans -- like Majority Leader Eric Cantor -- have also called on Weiner to step down.
On Tuesday's edition of Power Play Live w/Chris Stirewalt, Charles Krauthammer advised Republicans to do just the opposite of what Priebus and other GOP leaders are doing. He says staying mum on a scandal like this should be the lesson Republicans learned from the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky scandal.
