Republicans push back: Debate over seeking recount in states won by Clinton

The countdown is on to see whether efforts by the left to call for recounts in this year’s presidential election actually make a difference in the final tallies.

Attention continues to swirl around Green Party candidate Jill Stein’s push for recounts in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan – states where Donald Trump had small margins of victory over Hillary Clinton.

Some experts though question whether the same attention should be given to states Clinton won by similar margins.

For comparison the latest election tally shows Clinton winning Nevada by 26,434 votes, only slightly larger than Trump’s 24 thousand vote lead in Wisconsin.

“The margins are fairly close, not as close as we have seen historically in some past elections …  though close enough that they can potentially trigger a recount,” Jeanne Zaino, political science professor at Iona College, told FoxNews.com.

Neither state has a mandatory recount for close elections though one can be requested.

Zaino added, “the problem with US elections is that we have 50 states, each of the states have different laws which guides what happens in those states”.

Nevada Secretary of State’s office told FoxNews.com the deadline to submit a recount request in the state is November 29 and none has been requested.

Analysts are split on whether Republicans should push for one in the Silver State.

“President-elect Trump should not get involved in a recount in Nevada because even those numbers of her win would be a historical flip-flop in a recount … the numbers are too far a margin to change this election result,” election law attorney David Di Pietro said.

Zaino contends “I think they should pursue it and I think Stein and the Green Party should pursue in the states they are pursuing it”.

Even as Wisconsin officials agree to proceed with a vote recount, time is winding down for any other request to happen.

“We have a very narrow calendar because this all has to be decided by December 13 and whether the states have the funding and whether they have the ability to get those recounts completed if indeed they are triggered”, said Zaino.
