Report: Russian fighter jet shot down over Syria

The Russian jet shot down by Turkish fighters was brought down in Syrian airspace, said a U.S. official, which contradicts Turkey's claim that the plane was brought down in Turkish airspace.

The assessment was made after analyzing the heat signature of the Russian plane, the official told Reuters, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

Early Tuesday, Turkey reported that two of its F-16s shot down a fighter jet after it crossed the Syrian border into Turkish airspace and ignored 10 warnings to turn back. Russian officials confirmed separately that it was one of its warplanes that was shot down, but denied that it had crossed into Turkish airspace.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization held an emergency meeting on Tuesday to learn more about the incident. Tuesday afternoon, the State Department said it too was gathering more information, and refused to speculate on the event until more was known.
