The Commanders and 49ers are located on opposite sides of the country so they really don’t play each other all that often. They have met each other 36 times total (with four in the playoffs). The 49ers are the leaders with a 23-21-1 record in the series. The two franchises have also played each other three times in the past six years. 

In the past three meetings, the 49ers are 2-1. In 2020, the Commanders earned their lone win of the past three matchups. The teams look significantly different from how they do today. Alex Smith was under center for the Commanders in that game, and Nick Mullens was quarterback for San Francisco.

In 2022, the 49ers hosted the Commanders and absolutely clobbered them. Brock Purdy was under center and threw for two touchdowns. Both of those passes went to George Kittle. Christian McCaffrey and Ray Ray McCloud scored two more on the ground. The 49ers won the game by 17. 

In 2023, the 49ers won by 17 points again. They held the Commanders to 0 points in three of the four quarters. Sam Howell was the quarterback for Washington in this one, so this will be the first taste of action for Jayden Daniels. Purdy gets his shot to beat the Commanders for three straight matchups. 

Now in 2026, with very different teams, we will see if the 49ers can cover the tough spread. You get to determine whether you think the Commanders can keep it close, or if the 49ers can once again win by multiple scores.
