A federal office tasked with evaluating the safety of artificial intelligence systems has stopped publishing its research and is operating without a permanent director, as staff members face a new reporting arrangement with the White House, according to a report.

Officials at the Commerce Department's Center for Advancing Innovation and Standards for Super Intelligence (CAISSI) were recently asked to informally report to a White House office, two former government officials familiar with the discussions told The Associated Press in a report published Sunday.

The development has raised concerns among critics that the Trump administration could exert greater influence over independent AI safety evaluations, potentially affecting research into cybersecurity threats and other risks posed by increasingly powerful AI systems.

The center, which has a $10 million annual budget, has experienced leadership turnover and stopped publicly releasing its safety research earlier this year, prompting questions from Congress.

The White House did not directly address questions about the center but pointed to President Donald Trump's newly established Super Intelligence Force, which it said would help maintain American leadership in AI.

Supporters of closer White House coordination argue the arrangement could give the center greater prominence and potentially more funding.
