Meal subscription kit offers fixings for a meat lover's feast

Subscription meal kits and food delivery services are a dime a dozen these days.

But if you’re the type who prefers chowing down on some seriously hearty American cooking, there’s a good chance the trend (with many services focusing on farm-to-table style meals) hasn’t struck your fancy — until now.

Started by Boston Burger Company (BBC) in September 2016, BurgaBox offers a monthly meal subscription kit featuring all the makings for a proper meat lover’s feast, including french fries, wings, burgers and mac ’n cheese. For a monthly fee, users receive the ingredients and directions for whipping up meals in 30 minutes or less.

According to market research firm Packaged Facts, more than 150 brands have launched meal subscription kits, leading to an estimated $1.5 billion in 2016 alone.

In the next five years, the firm predicts the market will balloon to a multibillion-dollar industry.

Despite the increasingly crowded playing field, the BurgaBox founders still think their kit brings something new to the table as more of an "indulgence."

“Our meal kits are unlike any other meal kits on the market,” Chuck Sillari, founder and co-owner of Boston Burger Company, told the Observer. “Other meal kits are just putting the groceries into boxes with cooking instructions. We are actually preparing and cooking stuff before we ship it."

“It’s really not a meal kit,” he added. “It’s a party kit.”

Each month BurgaBox announces new themed boxes. For example, the $65 BurgaBox’s Mac Attack Box (on sale) features two Mac Attack Burgers, two sides of BBC’s famous coleslaw as well as baked beans, a tray of pulled pork mac ‘n cheese and a tray of garlic parmesan cheese.

Just in time for the big game Feb. 5,  BurgaBox’s Superbowl Sideline Spread Box, which currently goes for $125, comes with party favorites like pizza fries, chili fries, honey barbecue wings and homemade dressings.

For the company’s famous burgers, which can be ordered a la carte, prices range from $45 to $65 for a two- or four-pack.

While the company doesn’t list its calorie info online, with loaded burgers topped with ingredients like bacon (in the All-American), mac ’n cheese (the Mac Attack), and guacamole (the Green MOnstah), it’s a safe bet the kits are best enjoyed with a friend-- or three.
