Latin Grammy Nominees Announced: Carlos Vives, Others Lead With Six

Carlos Vives, Javier Garza and Illya Kuryaki & The Valderramas lead the list of nominees for this year’s Latin Grammys with five nominations each. Edgar Barrer, Andres Castro, Julio Reyes Copello, Alejandra Sanz and Caetano Veloso closely follow them with four.

“To be nominated is an achievement, and I want all the artists in Colombia to know these nominations are also theirs. Let’s win,” Vives said in a statement.

“5 nominations Latin Grammys!!! CHANCES!!! Thank you!!,” Illya Kuryaki & The Valderramas said on Twitter.

The Latin Recording Academy announced the nominees Wednesday for the 14 annual Latin Grammy with an eclectic list of established artists and emerging talent in the various genres of Latin music.

Like last year, there are 10 nominees in the general categories for Best New Artist, Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

Competing for the album of the year award are: Pablo Alboran ("Tanto"), Bajofondo ("Presente"), Miguel Bosé ("Papitwo"), Andrés Cepeda ("Lo mejor que hay en mi vida" ), Natalie Cole ("En Español"), Guago ("Escultura"), Gian Marco ("Versiones"), Draco Rosa ("Vida"), Alejando Sanz ("La música no se toca") and Carlos Vives ("Corazon Profundo").

For record of the year, the nominees are Pablo Alborán ("Tanto"), Marc Anthony ("Vivir mi vida"), Buika ("La nave del olvido"), Andrés Cepeda ("Lo mejor que hay en mi vida"), Natalie Cole featuring Juan Luis Guerra ("Bachata rosa"), Santiago Cruz ("Desde lejos"), Draco Rosa featuring Ricky Martin ("Más y más"), Alejandro Sanz ("Mi marciana"), Caetano Veloso ("Um abraçaço") and Carlos Vives ("Volví a nacer").

Gaby Moreno, A Band of Bitches, Leslie Cartaya, Eliacim, Clarice Falcao, Jesús Hidalgo, Maluma, Mojito Lite, Quattro and Milton Salcedo are up for Best New Artist.

The great Roberto Carlos returned to the ring with two Grammy nominations – one for “Esse cara sou eu” for song of the year. The song will duke it out with “La que me gusta” by Los Amigos Invisibles, “Llora” by Jesse y Joy with Domm; “Lo mejor que hay en mi vida” by Andres Cepeda; “Mi marciana” by Alejandro Sanz; “Mi Novia se esta poniendo vieja” by Ricardo Arjona; “Si yo fuera tu,” by Gilberto Santa Rosa; “Solo el amor nos salvara” by Synteck with Malú; “Un abracaco” by Caetano Veloso and “Volvia a nacer” by Carlos Vives.

Artists nominated three times were: Alboran, Bajofondo, Andres Cepeda, Natalie Cole, Piloto, Guerra Rosa and Syntek as well as Bori Alarcon, Antonio Baglio, Tom Coyne, Sergio George and La Mala Rodriguez.

“I loved that they said my name three times,” Rosa, who recently suffered from cancer, told The Associated Press after the ceremony announcing the nominations at the Avallon Hollywood, where he was one of the presenters. “I definitely want to win, I will let you know,” he said with a smile.

Artists with two nominations were: Miguel Bose, Daddy Yankee, Gilberto Gil, Guaco, Natalia Lafourcade, Gian Marco, Pitbull, Arturo Sandoval and Gustavo Santaolalla.

The nominations marked the return of established artists such as Beto Cuevas, nominated for best pop/rock album; Albita and Guayacán for best salsa album; and Vikki Carr, nominated for best ranchera.

"I can't stop smiling. I am very pleased that the Latin public has accepted this record," said Cole about the nomination for "Natalie Cole En Espanol."

Mexican singer-songwriter Julieta Venegas, who has won five Latin Grammys, received a best contemporary vocal pop album nomination for "Los momentos."

The Latin Grammys will be broadcasted live on Univision on Nov. 21 from the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
