At an incredibly young age, Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai made headlines for her efforts to further the educational opportunities for young women in her region. It was a noble, inspirational act that earned her worldwide praise and a Nobel Peace Prize, but it also made her the target of an unspeakable act of violence.

Now, Yousafzai is making headlines for a different reason: She's the subject of "He Named Me Malala," a powerful new documentary from Oscar-winning director Davis Guggenheim.

"It's wonderful," said Yousafzai, who attended the premiere with several of her fellow activists and friends. "I have these young girls together with me — girls from Nigeria, Pakistan — who want the right to education, and they're standing up for it.

"So if their voice can be heard … this is what I want," she added.

Also on the red carpet was Malala's father Ziauddin, and it's clear he couldn't have been more proud.

"I always say that, once upon a time, she was my daughter — but now, I am her father only," joked Ziauddin. "Many parents write to me [saying], "She is not only your daughter; she is our daughter as well.' And I say 'Yes!'" he beamed.
