Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning will set the NFL record for passing yards soon enough, but thanks to Indianapolis Colts cornerback Darius Butler, the future Hall of Famer will have to wait another week.
Manning, who entered Sunday's loss to the Colts 284 yards shy of Brett Favre's record, came up three yards short of the mark. Butler intercepted Manning on Denver's final drive, preserving the 27-24 win and denying Manning the record.
"I was in position to make that play and I told myself I had to make it," Butler said, per ESPN's Mike Wells.
It was Butler's first interception since the 2013 season.
"I think that (Butler) made a heck of a play to tell you the truth," Manning said. "He kind of beat (Demaryious Thomas) to the ball. Obviously a good play by him, and had to throw it probably a little earlier than I wanted to. A throw that I would like to have back for sure."
