Moscow, Russia – The United States men captured gold in the 4x400-meter relay Friday at the 2013 World Track & Field Championships, while Jamaica's Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce made it double-gold by winning the women's 200 meters.
The U.S. men, featuring David Verburg, Tony McQuay, Arman Hall and LaShawn Merritt, crossed first in a time of 2 minutes, 58.71 seconds. Merritt and McQuay finished 1-2 in the 400-meter individual event earlier this week.
Jamaica was second Friday at 2:59.88, followed by Russia at 2:59.90.
Fraser-Pryce won gold in the 100 meters on Monday and finished Friday's race in a time of 22.17 seconds, edging Murielle Ahoure of the Ivory Coast by .15 seconds. Nigeria's Blessing Okagbare took the bronze, just 6/1000ths of a second behind Ahoure.
American Allyson Felix, who beat Fraser-Pryce for Olympic gold at the distance last summer in London, did not finish Friday. She grabbed her right leg early in the race.
The men's 200 meters will be run Saturday and the fastest semifinal time on Friday was American Curtis Mitchell's 19.97 seconds. The favorite will be Usain Bolt, the 100-meter champion who cruised to victory in his semifinal heat with a time of 20.12.
Britain's Mohamed Farah won gold in the men's 5,000 meters, finishing first with a time of 13 minutes, 26.98 seconds. He also won gold in the 10,000 meters, repeating the distance double-gold he completed at last summer's Olympics.
Also Friday, Russian Aleksandr Menkov won the men's long jump with a distance of 8.56 meters and countrymate Tatyana Lysenko took gold in the women's hammer throw at 78.80 meters. Lysenko also won gold in the London Olympics.
