Chicago, IL – Patrick Kane scored in the first period to give the Chicago Blackhawks a 1-0 lead over the Boston Bruins after 20 minutes of play in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
Chicago took the lead with 2:33 to play on Kane's eighth goal of the playoffs.
A shot from the left point by Johnny Oduya saw the puck break the stick of Dennis Seidenberg and trickle behind Tuukka Rask. The disc went behind the net to the right of the goaltender, but Kane was there to bring it back out and tuck it in for a 1-0 advantage.
Corey Crawford made 11 stops in the first period to keep Boston off the board.
Chicago had the first chances of the game around 3 1/2 minutes in as Rask made a nice stop on a right point blast from Duncan Keith, then caught a break a few seconds later as Jonathan Toews' shot from in front went off the right post and stayed out.
Brad Marchand was fighting for the puck along the left boards and was able to take control, skating to the slot and getting a backhand off, but Crawford was up to the task with around 8 1/2 minutes left.
Rask was called upon again later in the first period as Michal Handzus sent a pass from the slot to the left wing where Patrick Sharp ripped a one-timer on net. Rask, though, slid over to make the stop and keep it a scoreless game with just over five minutes to play.
This series is tied at 2-2 as Games 1 and 2 were split in Chicago, while Boston took Game 3 at home, before dropping a 6-5 decision in Game 4 on Wednesday.
