Officials say a bus carrying dozens of Romanian tourists has crashed in southern France, killing a baby and injuring 33 passengers.

Regional authorities were quoted by the SIPA news agency as saying the bus burst a tire and veered off a highway in the Var area of Provence, and that the rescue operation involved 150 firemen and 11 helicopters.

The crash occurred Sunday as the coach was taking vacationers back to Romania after a trip to Spain.

In a statement, France's Interior Ministry said many of the injured were being treated in local hospitals.
