Thai military government links car bomb on holiday island to political turmoil
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Thailand's military government says a car bomb explosion on the popular holiday island of Samui that injured seven people could be the work of the junta's opponents.
According to government spokesman said Maj. Gen. Sansern Kaewkamnerd, initial reports indicate the attack was carried out by the same group behind recent blasts in Bangkok, which caused no fatalities.
He did not elaborate, but the leader of the junta that took power in a coup last May has blamed the Bangkok blasts on groups opposed to the military takeover.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The improvised bomb late Friday was hidden in a pickup truck and went off in the basement parking area of the Central Festival mall.
Authorities believe the vehicle was stolen from one of the three southernmost Thai provinces plagued by Islamic insurgency.
