A driver for international tax-booking service Uber who was detained for allegedly raping a woman he was driving home is due to appear in a New Delhi court.

Police said they filed the case against 32-year-old Shif Kumar Yadav after the woman, who works for a finance company, reported being raped Friday night on her way home from a dinner engagement in the Indian capital.

The suspect was arrested Sunday night in his hometown south of New Delhi, and was taken by police on Monday to court.

Police told Press Trust of India they were working to verify Yadav's claims that he had been acquitted of rape charges in 2011, after spending seven months in jail. PTI did not give any further details or name the police source.
