Report: Senegal making little progress in fight against forced child begging
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}An international human rights group says Senegal's government has failed to make good on promises to close residential schools with decrepit housing.
In a report released Wednesday, Human Rights Watch said tens of thousands of boys in Senegal who attend such Quranic boarding schools are also still being forced to beg each day.
The group also said that despite government promises to shut down schools where children live in dangerous conditions, little action has been taken in the last year.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The problem drew renewed attention last March when eight boys died in a fire at a boarding school in the capital.
Senegalese legislators are due to consider legislation that would provide more oversight of the schools but someone still must enforce the rules even if they are passed.
