MOSCOW – A senior Russian prosecutor says jailed billionaire Mikhail Khodorkovsky could face new charges.
Khodorkovsky has been imprisoned for ten years. He was found guilty of tax evasion in 2005 and convicted of embezzlement in 2010. Critics have dismissed these charges as President Vladimir Putin's political retaliation for Khodorkovsky's political ambitions.
Alexander Zvyagintsev, deputy prosecutor general, said in an interview with the Interfax news agency published Friday that there are several criminal cases related to Khodorkovsky being investigated and that they have good chances of making it to court.
Rumors about a third case for Khodorkovsky have been circulating recently and his lawyers said that the group of a dozen investigators which was formed ten years ago was never disbanded, meaning new charges could come at any moment.
