MONTREAL – Prosecutors and government lawyers in Quebec have launched a strike to back their demand for a 40 percent hike in pay.
The association representing the prosecutors confirmed in a statement Tuesday that a strike had been called.
The strike means a delay in thousands of cases.
Quebec prosecutors and lawyers have said they are overworked and are the worst paid in North America. They top out at about $102,000 a year, compared to their Ontario counterparts who earn as much as $196,000.
Quebec had warned the 1,000 government lawyers and 450 prosecutors to lower their salary demands if they wanted a new deal.
