PESHAWAR, Pakistan – A Pakistani court has called for the government to review an ordered retrial of a doctor who helped the U.S. search for Osama bin Laden over a separate case.
The tribunal's ruling Wednesday called the retrial order for Dr. Shakil Afridi too ambiguous. Afridi was convicted of "conspiring against the state" in May 2012 and sentenced to 33 years in prison.
The doctor's conviction was related to allegations that he gave money and provided medical treatment to Islamic militants, not for helping the CIA track down bin Laden. The doctor's family and the militants denied the allegations.
The court Wednesday said that decision did not make it clear whether Afridi would be tried under regulations which govern Pakistan's tribal areas or those of the rest of the country.
