Novak Djokovic won the first set of the French Open final 6-3, breaking Rafael Nadal in the eighth game Sunday and then holding to take the early lead.

Nadal saved two break points in that same game, but a forehand wide gave Djokovic the game moments later.

The top-seeded Spaniard had a chance to break right back, but he failed to convert two chances, and then hit a forehand long to give Djokovic the set.

Nadal is trying to win the French Open title for the ninth time, and fifth time in a row. Djokovic, however, needs to win the title at Roland Garros to complete a career Grand Slam.
